Australian Orchid Foundation

Award of Honour for 1995 granted to:

John Henry (Jack) Wilkie

THE GRANTING OF THIS AWARD RECOGNISES THAT:-

Your exceptional contribution to the knowledge of Australia’s indigenous orchids, through your exploration of a special area in the Bellenden Ker Range, with access only by foot and pedal.

Your contribution to scientific knowledge by the collection of type specimens, 16 in all, between the years of 1941 and 1956, three of which have been named in your honour, and these are:-

Dendrobium wilkianum (1941)
Bulbophyllum wilkianum (1946)
Taeniophyllum wilkianum (1946)

Your knowledge of the ecology and culture of native orchids willingly passed on, giving A.W. Dockrill invaluable information for the publication of “Australian Indigenous Orchids”.

Your willingness to freely share your knowledge, and expertise in cultivation, with all who visited the well known bushhouse and garden of your Babinda home.
