Title: Hunter Region Botanic Gardens – improvement to and development of the orchid collection.
Applicant: Noel Winney – Orchid House Curator
Institution: Hunter Region Botanic Gardens, Heatherbrae NSW.
The orchid collection at Hunter Region Botanic Gardens contains a significant number of both exotic and native orchids. It includes both tropical and temperate species. The collection is housed in a passive solar tropical orchid house, a shaded temperate orchid house and in various theme gardens. Many species of terrestrial orchids grow in the conservation zones of the gardens.
The objectives of the project included
- increasing the range of species orchids in the collection.
- optimising growing conditions for the cultivation of a wider range of species.
- making the collection more accessible to visitors in the gardens and thereby increasing educational opportunities for adults and children.
The grant was used to install an internal metal security fence in the passive solar tropical orchid house. This has made the collection more accessible to visitors to the gardens through extended opening times and improved security.
