Australian Orchid Foundation

In memory of

SYDNEY JAMES WALDIE

~ 27th September, 1997

With much regret members were advised of the passing of Sid Waldie on Saturday 27th September, 1997. The President made the sad announcement at the September monthly meeting of the Society. Our late friend joined Western Suburbs Orchid Society in 1965 and later The Orchid Society of New South Wales (OSNSW).

At OSNSW he served on the committee, Show Committee and ultimately joined the Judging Panel for which his services were greatly appreciated. He served a three year term as President of OSNSW in the late 1970’s and was awarded Life Membership in 1982 as well as a Gold Medal for “Outstanding Service”.

Sid was also a member of The Australian Orchid Foundation, Five Dock RSL, Berowra, Eastern Suburbs, and a foundation member and first Patron of the Hawkesbury District Orchid Society.

He became interested in orchid stamps and was one of the early collectors in OSNSW.

During this time Sid was supported by his charming wife, Mary, who was a great supporter and worker for the ladies auxiliary.

Prior to his retirement, Sid and Mary resided in Five Dock for many years, moving north to Chilcotts’ Grass at Goonellabah. Reports had filtered through that Sid had not been well for some time and needed a wheelchair to move about.

We of Sid’s era, who knew of his activities in the Society, will remember him as a keen judge and a fine gentleman.
